Terms of Reference
This report is written on your request on 29 September 2011 to find out the reasons for the choosing of minor in Faculty of Letters, English Department , UNPAD in 2011. This report is to be submitted by 10 October 2011.

Procedure
I interviewed 20 students and a lecturer in English Department. Firstly, I checked which students that have taken the minor. Secondly, I asked some questions to them. I asked in what year they are now, why they choose the minor, and what the title of their thesis. Then I examined their answers by observing the background of their reason.

Findings
1. Most students prefer choosing the linguistic program. There are four classes for students that have taken the minor in 2011. There are two linguistic classes and the rest are a literature class and a translation class.
2. I interviewed 10 students and a lecturer from linguistic program. Most students who have chosen linguistic program said that they choose it because they like education, want to be a teacher, and are interested in studying structure. Two of them said that they choose linguistic because they want to be a linguist. They like studying the forming of words. The rest said that they choose linguistic because they aren’t familiar with literature, don’t like to analyze the literature work, and feel difficult to understand the plot of story.
3. I only interviewed 4 students from literature program. Most of them prefer choosing literature because they like art. They said that they are interested in literature work. They are also interested in knowing more about the genre of texts. They said they can get many lessons in life from studying literature. They can know the culture from others in many times although they don’t go around the world and don’t live in the past time. One of them said she chooses literature because her score in linguistic was bad.
4. The translator program first opens in this year. I interviewed six students from translation program. Most of them said that they choose translation program because they want to be a translator. Even, one of them has become the freelance as a translator.  Others said they want to know what will be studied in this program.
5. The students that have taken the minor are not only the students from the seventh term. Some of them are from fifth term.

Conclusion
1. Most students prefer choosing linguistic program because they like education and language structure. They feel difficult to analyze the literature work.
2. The minority that choose literature program said that they like the literature work. Although some of them don’t want to look for a job which is connected with literature they still choose this program. They said that they can study many life lessons from literature.
3. Actually, translation, the new minor in English Department has many enthusiasts. However in this year, there is only a class of translation program because the students still don’t know what will be studied in this program.

Recommendations
1. I recommend the students to know what their interest before they choose the minor, so they can focus in their minor.
2. I also recommend the students to ask the teacher more about explanation of each minor in Faculty of Letters, English Department Universitas Padjadjaran. Thus, the students can know more what will be studied in the minor that they will choose.
